Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind People (Signature/CACDP Unit T101)

This course is ideal for everyone especially those who:

  • Has a deaf or deafblind child/family member

  • Wants to learn more about deaf/deafblind issues

Sessions include:

  • Communication practice
  • Full preparation for the assessment

This unit is a formally assessed, internally marked/externally verified short practical assessment in 4 areas:

  • Appropriateness of questions,
  • Demonstration of clear speech
  • Ability to use three basic deaf/deafblind communication methods
  • Repairing a 'communication breakdown'
N.B: We include the majority of the 'Deaf and Deafblind Awareness' and 'Communication Tactics' as we believe it to be a vital part of learning at this level.  Formal assessment in this area qualification DAC1 is not mandatory. Those wishing to take it should discuss this with the tutor.

We believe that by incorporating most aspects of  the DAC1 information into the level 1 course it will enable students to use appropriate coping strategies whilst learning.  They will also gain an understanding of, and ability to, communicate appropriately and effectively with many deaf and deafblind people including those that do not use British Sign Language.

Students in posession of the new 'DAC1'/old 'deaf awareness' and 'deafblind awareness' or equivalent certificate/experience will be the only students exempt from DAC1 coursework, but will find sessions easier of they refresh themselves with the inofrmation.

British Sign Language Level 2                                     (Signature/CACDP Units BSL 201, 202 and 203)

Sessions  include:

  • Building on skills gained at level 1
  • Understanding and using contextually correct signs
  • Grammar
  • Regional differences/dialects
  • Standard and non standard signs
  • How to recognise/understanding new signs or explain new concepts
  • Coping strategies
  • Full preparation for the unitised Level 2 assessments

Level 3

BSL Level 3

This course enables individuals to bridge the gap between Signature Level 2 and NVQ Level 3.

The candidate will not need to build a portfolio of evidence, however they will need to keep their own record of feedback given and a log of all outside activities relating to this course.

A higher level of theory than is recommended by other bridging qualifications will be taught, giving individuals translation skills above average for post level two pre level 3 NVQ students.

Ways to increase your chances of passing assessments:

  • Attending regularly

  • Work with, and learn from, others
  • Doing all work set both in and out of the sessions - making time for independent studies when not at class

  • Going to Deaf Clubs/Sign Club regularly

*If you  wish to take the formal assessments in 'Deaf and Deafblind Awareness' and 'Communication Tactics with Deaf and Deafblind People' you can gain a formal Signature/CACDP qualification. There is a fee for each assessment and additional tuition would be required.
